Every student needs a framework for how to follow Jesus. They’ve heard the words “faith,” “obedience,” and “love,” but without understanding the bigger story of God’s covenants, the Christian life can feel confusing. What exactly does it mean to live in the New Covenant instead of the Old? And why does it matter in everyday life?
This Is The Way is a 4-week youth ministry curriculum that helps students understand God’s covenant system and how Jesus fulfills it. By comparing the Old Covenant (what we might call “The Grey”) with the New Covenant (“The Way”), teens will see how God revealed His character, how sin demanded a Savior, and how Jesus’ sacrifice changes the way we live. Through Scripture, creative illustrations, and gospel-centered application, students will be challenged to leave behind fear-based obedience and embrace the freedom of love-based discipleship in Christ.
This series begins by grounding students in the Old Covenant. In Week 1, they’ll see how God gave His people laws not to weigh them down but to reveal His holiness, the seriousness of sin, and their need for rescue. In Week 2, they’ll encounter Jesus at the Last Supper and learn that His announcement of the New Covenant wasn’t an add-on — it was a complete shift, replacing the old system with Himself at the center. In Week 3, students will confront how culture and even Christians often twist the word “love,” but Jesus clarified its meaning with a new command: to love others as He has loved us. And in Week 4, they’ll see that Old Covenant thinking motivates by fear, while New Covenant thinking motivates by freedom and transformation into Christ’s image.
By the end of This Is The Way, students will have a clear grasp of why God makes covenants, how the New Covenant reshapes their view of obedience and love, and what it means to walk in “The Way” today.
Week 1 – The Grey Paved the Way (Exodus 19:5-8)
Intro: Just as the Mandalorian follows “The Way,” Christians have a way to follow too — but it starts with understanding the Old Covenant.
Truth: God established the Old Covenant, predicated on obedience to the law, to reveal His holiness and expose humanity’s sin.
Descent: Though demanding, the Old Covenant perfectly pointed to the need for a Savior.
Takeaway: The Grey paved the way for The Way.
Week 2 – Out with the Old (Luke 22:7, 19-20)
Intro: Without covenant clarity, even well-intentioned actions can push people away from Christ.
Truth: Jesus shocked His disciples by declaring Himself the new object of Passover, signaling a total shift.
Descent: The New Covenant wasn’t an addition to the old — it was a replacement.
Takeaway: New is not new in addition to.
Week 3 – The New Commandment (John 13:34)
Intro: Like a Lego build gone wrong, small misunderstandings of “love” have led us far from the original design.
Truth: Jesus gave one new commandment: love others as He has loved us.
Descent: Our model for seeing, speaking to, and treating others comes directly from Christ’s example.
Takeaway: Do for others what Jesus has done for you.
Week 4 – A New Covenant Lens (1 John 4:18-19; Ephesians 4:22-24; Ephesians 2:2-4)
Intro: Like Lightning McQueen in Cars 3, many of us need to throw off the old if we want to thrive in the new.
Truth: Old Covenant thinking motivates by fear and superiority; New Covenant thinking motivates by love, freedom, and transformation into Christ’s likeness.
Descent: A New Covenant lens changes everything about how we live.
Takeaway: The Way will make you way different because you’ll weigh things differently.

Connects Old Testament to New: Shows how the Old Covenant points to the need for Jesus.
