Vulnerable Series: 4-Week Youth Series on Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is one of the darkest realities in our world. It thrives by exploiting people in vulnerable situations for profit. Sadly, it’s not the only industry like that. Predatory systems of every kind prey on the weak and use power to oppress. And if we’re honest, every one of us is vulnerable in our own way — whether to sin, fear, insecurity, or circumstances outside our control.

Vulnerable is a 4-week youth ministry curriculum that helps students understand what it means to follow Jesus into places of vulnerability. Instead of ignoring injustice or distancing themselves from those in need, teens will learn that Jesus declared His mission to bring freedom, modeled vulnerability for our sake, and calls His followers to value both eternal hope and earthly justice. This series helps students see that the gospel is not just about someday in heaven, but also about how we live today for the sake of others.

Series Overview

In Week 1, students see how Jesus launched His ministry in Luke 4 by declaring that He came to bring good news to the poor, freedom for the oppressed, and sight for the blind. Before they can fight for justice, they need to grasp that Jesus’ mission includes real, earthly transformation. In Week 2, they’ll realize that Jesus’ focus on the vulnerable isn’t optional for His followers — it’s central to what it means to walk with Him. In Week 3, students will reflect on Isaiah 53 and discover that Jesus became vulnerable on the cross so we could be rescued, and that we’re called to imitate His sacrificial love by stepping into discomfort for others. Finally, in Week 4, they’ll explore the already/not yet of the Kingdom of God, learning that while Christ’s Kingdom is not yet complete, our actions today participate in bringing it to earth.

By the end of Vulnerable, students will see both their own vulnerability and the vulnerability of others with new eyes. They’ll be equipped to respond not with fear, but with courage, compassion, and active participation in God’s redemptive mission.

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1 – Grasping Jesus’ Mission (Luke 4:17-19)

  • Intro: Human trafficking and other injustices expose how the vulnerable are exploited.

  • Truth: When Jesus read Isaiah in the synagogue, He declared His mission was to bring freedom and healing in every sphere of life.

  • Takeaway: The value Jesus brings isn’t just eternal — it’s also earthly.

Week 2 – Joining Jesus’ Focus (Luke 4:18)

  • Intro: Discovering our own vulnerability can push us toward fear instead of freedom.

  • Truth: Jesus’ focus on the vulnerable shows us what His followers must be about. Our influence isn’t only eternal — it should bring real earthly impact.

  • Takeaway: The value we bring to others isn’t just eternal — it’s also earthly.

Week 3 – Becoming Vulnerable for Others (Isaiah 53:4-6)

  • Intro: Recognizing vulnerability often makes us hesitant to step in for others.

  • Truth: Jesus bore our sin and became vulnerable for our sake. Likewise, we’re called to enter into discomfort to help those who are suffering.

  • Takeaway: Become vulnerable for the vulnerable.

Week 4 – Living in the Kingdom Already/Not Yet (Luke 4:18-19)

  • Intro: The “already/not yet” of God’s Kingdom shows up in our own lives daily.

  • Truth: Jesus inaugurated His Kingdom, but it won’t be complete until He returns. In the meantime, our earthly actions participate in God’s eternal mission.

  • Takeaway: The value we bring to others isn’t just earthly — it’s also eternal.

Optional Event (Not Included, Just An Idea!)

Justice & Compassion Night – Host an awareness event where students learn about vulnerable populations in their community, pray for victims of injustice, and participate in a practical service project (such as assembling care kits for shelters or writing letters of advocacy).
