YOUTH GROUP LESSONS ON CONFLICT

Splash is a 4-week youth ministry series on conflict

Why This Topic Matters

Conflict is inevitable in life. Like cliff-diving, the moment you hit the water of conflict, you’re disoriented—your perception of yourself and others gets skewed, and we often handle conflict poorly because of it.

The gospel offers a different lens, helping students engage conflict in healthier, balanced ways. Since the “splash” of conflict can’t be avoided, students need to learn how to take their cues toward others from God’s cues toward us in Jesus Christ.

What Students Are Facing Right Now

  • Students often feel disoriented in conflict and react with unhealthy patterns.

  • They get caught in “seesaw fighting,” trading dramatic reactions that escalate conflict.

  • Fear of rejection keeps them from being the one to take the first step toward reconciliation.

  • They treat conflict as personal battles rather than recognizing the deeper spiritual war at play.

  • Many students avoid conflict altogether, even when reconciliation is needed.

How This Series Helps

Splash helps students see conflict through the gospel: learning to change their perception, be steady instead of dramatic, risk reconciliation, and remember that their real battle is not against people but against spiritual forces.

Series Overview

Week 1 — What You See

Scripture: Matthew 6:22–23 (NLT)
The Point: The gospel changes what you can see and be in the deep.
Summary: Conflict disorients our perception, but when we learn to see through Jesus’ eyes instead of past wounds, we find balance and light.

Week 2 — Steadfastness

Scripture: Joel 2:12–13 (ESV)
The Point: Steadfastness is stabilizing.
Summary: Instead of a destructive back-and-forth, students are called to imitate God’s steady love and grace, which calms dramatic swings in conflict.

Week 3 — Reconciliation

Scripture: Titus 3:3–7 (NLT)
The Point: Reconciliation is worth the risk.
Summary: Just as God reached out first in reconciliation with us, students learn to take the risk of reaching out in conflict, trusting redemption is worth it.

Week 4 — War

Scripture: Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)
The Point: Your war is with powers, not people.
Summary: Students are reminded that conflict isn’t ultimately against another person, but against spiritual forces; Jesus wants the gospel to win in us, not sin.

FAQs

Q: What makes this different from a typical “conflict resolution” talk?
A: Splash doesn’t just give surface-level strategies. This series roots conflict in the gospel and reshapes how students see and respond based on how God has responded to us.

Q: What if students are afraid to take the first step toward reconciliation?
A: Week 3 shows them that reconciliation is always worth the risk, because Jesus took the risk first for us.

Q: Does this series address the spiritual side of conflict?
A: Yes. Week 4 emphasizes that our fight isn’t against people, but against sin and spiritual forces, which reframes the whole conversation.

Q: Can this be adapted for retreats or small groups?
A: Yes. The four lessons and small-group questions are easily adjustable to retreats, weekend studies, or ongoing midweek teaching.
