Students are constantly told what’s “normal”—from friend groups, social feeds, even church subculture. But Mirage reframes “normal” around Jesus’ preeminence, not our feelings or patterns. The series’ gospel lens is explicit: Christ is first before all things, and when we keep Him front‑and‑center, false versions of “normal” stop distracting growth.
Mirage exposes common distortions: shame that pushes students away from God, amnesia about why the gospel is good news to them, and the temptation to dodge pain with distraction. Each week in Colossians 1 helps them replace those distortions with a Christ‑centered way forward.
Treating learned habits as “normal” (choosing self, lashing out, giving parts of themselves away to fit in) instead of measuring life by Jesus.
Letting shame define their relationship with God, so they pull back after failure instead of drawing near.
Forgetting why the gospel is good news to them, which drains motivation to keep growing.
Numbing pain with distraction (“game”) rather than learning how Christ redeems suffering with purpose.
Making culture’s version of “normal” the standard, rather than the Creator‑Sustainer who defines reality.
Mirage anchors spiritual growth in Colossians 1:17–24, teaching students to see life through the lens “Christ is first before all things,” and unmasking three frequent mirages—shame, same, and game—that derail discipleship.
A built‑in response night equips students to cement the learning with a reflective “truth letter” to their future selves.
The Point: Normal begins with Jesus.
Scripture: Colossians 1:17–21 (NLT)
Summary: Students learn that many things that feel normal are actually mirages; real “normal” starts by centering life on the Creator and Sustainer.
The Point: Shame has no place in front of your face.
Scripture: Colossians 1:22 (NLT)
Summary: Because God has reconciled us in Christ and now sees us holy and blameless, shame is a distortion that pulls us from Jesus; students learn to keep Jesus (not shame) before their face.
The Point: Remember why the good news is good news to you.
Scripture: Colossians 1:23 (NLT)
Summary: Students rehearse why the gospel is personally good news and renew their resolve to continue in faith with Jesus at the center.
The Point: In Christ, your pain has purpose.
Scripture: Colossians 1:24 (NLT)
Summary: Drawing from Paul’s example, students discover that suffering connects us to Jesus and can strengthen others—so we learn to do more with pain than avoid it.
Focus: Students write truth letters to their future selves to carry the series convictions forward.
