Imitators: A 5-Week Youth Ministry Sermon Series on Following Jesus

Everyone imitates someone. Students mirror what they admire, absorb what they follow, and slowly become what they consistently pursue. Social media proves it daily. Culture reinforces it constantly. Scripture names it clearly. Imitators is a 5-week youth ministry sermon series that helps students examine who and what they are modeling their lives after, and challenges them to intentionally pattern their lives after Jesus.

Built around a simple gospel lens, this series frames the entire journey: You will value what you follow. As students learn to follow Christ more closely, their values, priorities, compassion, and definition of greatness begin to shift.

Series Overview

Week 1 — Let Go of the Weight and Imitate (Philippians 3:7–14)

Paul reflects on his former status, achievements, and reputation, and counts them as loss compared to knowing Christ. Students wrestle with what is weighing them down in their race of faith and consider what it looks like to release misplaced priorities in order to pursue Jesus fully.

Week 2 — Imitation Requires Intentionality Despite Inconvenience (Mark 1:35–37)

Jesus, though busy and constantly in demand, intentionally withdraws to spend time with the Father. Students examine the importance of feeding their spirit through consistent time with God and learn that spiritual growth requires deliberate structure, even when it costs comfort.

Week 3 — To Imitate Jesus Is to Elevate Others (Luke 22:24–27)

On the night of His betrayal, Jesus redefines greatness for His disciples. In a world obsessed with status and recognition, students are challenged to pursue greatness through service, humility, and lifting others up rather than promoting themselves.

Week 4 — Compassion Demands Action (Matthew 14:13–21)

After receiving devastating news, Jesus is moved with compassion for a crowd in need and feeds over five thousand people. Students explore the difference between feeling compassion and acting on it, discovering that Christlike imitation requires stepping into needs rather than stepping away from them.

Week 5 – Discipleship Event

This event is a one-night experience designed to help students think more intentionally about what it means to follow Jesus. The night event involves a related activity, discussion, and reflection time.
