Rerun: A Youth Sermon Series on Breaking Bad Habits

The same mistake. The same apology. The same promise that next time will be different. When students feel stuck in a rerun, where do they go from there?

Rerun is a youth sermon series on breaking bad habits through selected passages in Jeremiah. Across three teaching weeks, students learn to hear God’s help, prepare their hearts, and trust Jesus to change them from within. A closing discipleship event gives them room to practice one faithful step toward a new season.

The series builds around one gospel lens: Reruns reflect the readiness of your heart. Students look beneath repeated mistakes and consider how they respond to God. Then they discover the hope of his promise to write his instruction on their hearts.

Series Overview

Week 1 – God Tries to Help You Press Play Every Day (Jeremiah 7:21–26 NLT)

God kept speaking to his people, but they kept refusing to listen. Students consider the help God offers and the ways they might tune it out. This week invites them to recognize his direction and respond instead of repeating the same patterns.

Week 2 – Reruns Reflect the Readiness of Your Heart (Jeremiah 4:1–4 NLT)

Jeremiah calls God’s people to prepare their hearts, much like a farmer prepares hard ground. Students explore why wanting a different result does not always lead to a different response. They consider what needs to change within them so they can receive and act on God’s help.

Week 3 – God Is Writing a New Season on Your Heart (Jeremiah 31:31–34 NLT)

God promises a new covenant that reaches beyond external rules. Through Jesus, students discover hope for change from the inside out. Rather than relying only on another promise to try harder, they learn to trust the God who offers forgiveness and writes his instruction on their hearts.

Week 4 – The Rerun Remote (Discipleship Event)

The closing event helps students put the series into practice. They reflect on their recurring patterns and take one faithful step toward a new season. It gives your group a hands-on way to respond together after the three teaching weeks.

Why Choose the Rerun Series?

Connects Scripture with Familiar Patterns

Students know what it feels like to make the same mistake again. This youth sermon series on breaking bad habits gives them a biblical framework for that frustration through Jeremiah.

Looks Beneath the Behavior

Rerun helps students examine the readiness of their hearts. The conversation moves beyond managing appearances toward listening to God and responding to him honestly.

Builds Toward Gospel Hope

The final teaching week centers on God’s new covenant promise. As a result, the series gives students more than a list of things to fix. It points them to Jesus and the change he brings from within.
