Grounded: A Youth Group Sermon Series About Insecurity

Insecurity can shape far more than how students feel about themselves. It can affect how they treat their friends, respond to failure, approach challenges, and relate to God. When external circumstances trigger self-consciousness, self-hatred, or self-doubt, students can end up doing the kinds of things that get them “grounded.”

Grounded is a four-week youth group sermon series (plus a discipleship event) through 1 John that helps students anchor their view of themselves in the reality of the gospel. As students learn that the gospel is the truest thing in the room, they are challenged to stop letting their insecurities define their reality and begin living from what Jesus has made true for them.

Series Overview

Week 1 — The gospel is the truest thing in the room (1 John 1:1–4 NLT)

Students often approach the gospel as a set of beliefs they hold while allowing the circumstances in front of them to feel more concrete and defining. John writes about Jesus as someone he heard, saw, and touched, grounding his joy in events he personally witnessed. This opening message helps students understand the gospel as a set of realities rooted in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, realities strong enough to steady them when insecurity is triggered.

Week 2 — When you’re the light, you’re in darkness (1 John 1:5–7 NLT)

Self-consciousness can feel sympathetic, but its hyperawareness of self can also become a form of pride that harms relationships and keeps students focused on how everyone perceives them. John teaches that God is light and that His people are called to walk in the light. Students are challenged to stop making themselves the brightest object in the room and let God’s truth shape their perspective, freeing them to overthink less, recover from embarrassing moments, and relate to others more healthily.

Week 3 — The King’s conclusion is the only one that counts (1 John 3:11–12, 15–16 NLT)

Anger toward other people can sometimes grow from a deeper hatred of ourselves. Through John’s use of Cain and Abel, this message shows how self-hatred can fuel hateful and harmful actions. John then points to Jesus, the King of everything, who gave up His life for us and demonstrated our value through His sacrifice. When Christ’s conclusion about a student’s worth becomes the truest thing in the room, self-hatred loses its fuel and love for others can take its place.

Week 4 — God is greater than your feelings (1 John 3:18–22 NLT)

Self-doubt can convince students that they are incapable of improving, building close relationships, or accomplishing something meaningful for God’s Kingdom. John connects living out the truth with confidence before God and reminds believers that God is greater than their feelings and knows everything. This final message calls students to stop treating their feelings as the final authority, approach God with bold confidence, and take faithful action even when they feel unsure of themselves.

Week 5 – Discipleship Event

Students put the central gospel lens of Grounded into practice during an interactive response night. In Room Read, they move toward the statement that would feel most true in a given scenario and consider how quickly one interpretation can define a moment. They then rotate through three stations focused on self-consciousness, self-hatred, and self-doubt, using passages from 1 John to replace insecurity-shaped statements with gospel realities. The event closes with each student creating a private Grounded Card that names where insecurity gets loud, what the gospel makes truer, and one grounded action they can take.

Why Choose the Grounded Series?

Addresses the ways insecurity affects other people

Grounded moves beyond treating insecurity as a private feeling. It helps students recognize how self-consciousness can make life revolve around them, how self-hatred can fuel harm toward others, and how self-doubt can keep them from contributing what God has placed within them.

Builds one clear gospel lens across five weeks

Every message returns to the same grounding truth: the gospel is the truest thing in the room. Students learn to view Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection as realities that define them when embarrassment, shame, anger, guilt, or fear threatens to take over.

Teaches insecurity through the text of 1 John

The series follows John’s teaching about witnessed gospel truth, walking in God’s light, Christ’s sacrificial love, and confidence before God. Each week connects a specific form of insecurity to the biblical text while keeping the larger goal in view, helping students know God more and become more like Jesus.
